Hauser Sand Camping sits directly on the soft dunes of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area about six miles north of North Bend off Highway 101, with the sand access road adjacent to Dune Bugs ATV Rentals. The campground offers 25 dispersed, primitive sites 8 that will work for both RVs and tents and 17 tent-only sites placed right on the dunefield where open slopes give way to patches of coastal forest. Sites are basic: there is no potable water, no hookups, and campers must bring portable toilets and fire pans; seasonal rainfall can change conditions on the sand, so plan accordingly. Access is strictly via 4x4 vehicles over soft sand routes; standard campsites are set up to accommodate as many as five vehicles and up to 20 people, while the larger group-capacity guidelines allow up to 10 vehicles and 40 people where designated. Because the sites are primitive and limited, reservations are required year-round and often fill up during the summer season. The area is particularly well known for off-highway vehicle recreation: Hauser is a gateway to designated routes such as the Hauser Beach Sand Route, Bark Sand Route, and Coast Guard Sand Route, plus extensive open riding zones that include some of the tallest dunes and broad coastal vistas. The Pacific Ocean lies a short ride to the west via sand routes like Hauser Beach and Saunders, and small lakes and ponds (including Beale Lake) rim the dunes to the north and south, creating opportunities for shoreline walks, wildlife viewing, fishing and other water activities in the broader Siuslaw National Forest. Other forest-area pursuits include hiking, biking, horseback riding and interpretive programs offered elsewhere in the forest. Important practical notes: reservations are required and a site left unoccupied 24 hours after the arrival time will be released as a no-show unless you call ahead; for facility-specific information or seasonal access updates call the Oregon Dunes Visitor Center or the ranger station at (541) 271-6000.
