“Unfortunately we were not able to use this campsite as it was only accessible with a all-wheel-drive vehicle permitted for use in the sand. I drive an all-wheel-drive car, but was not able to get to the site and had to leave. It would great to have this more clear when booking!”
“Numbered site was on a hill , unable to park my toy hauler . Tried to park close to the area but was in the way of other riders so only stayed one day until I could relocate to another camp site. I would not camp there again. ”

Horsfall Sand Camping sits at the southern edge of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area where tall, shifting dunes give way to pockets of coastal forest and saltwater inlets. From the dune crests you can look west to the Pacific and east toward the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range; nearby water features include Horsfall Lake, Bluebill Lake and Jordan Cove (the nearest portion of Coos Bay). Wildlife is active here coyote, black bear, elk, mink, porcupine and otter are all part of the landscape while shorebirds concentrate around Coos Bay a short distance to the south. The campground is an obvious base for off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding: riders can launch from the Horsfall staging area onto open riding zones or follow designated routes such as the Bark Sand and Bull Run Sand Routes. Non-motorized options are close by too the Bluebill Trail circles Bluebill Lake in about 1.2 miles and the Pacific shoreline is roughly two miles from the staging area for beach walks and surf fishing at Jordan Cove. The camping setup here is deliberately primitive and built for self-sufficiency: there are 36 sand campsites in the Horsfall area 21 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 15 tent-only sites and sites are available year-round by reservation only. All sand campsites require a 4x4 vehicle to reach them via soft-sand routes, and there is no potable water on site, so bring plenty of water as well as portable toilets and fire pans (open fires require a fire pan). Standard campsites permit up to five vehicles and 20 people; group sites fit up to ten vehicles and 40 people. To keep the sand area regulated, every vehicle and tent must remain within 150 feet of the campsite marker post. Reservations can fill quickly in peak summer months; camps not occupied within 24 hours of the arrival time are released as no-shows unless you call the ranger station to notify them. For facility-specific questions or late arrivals, contact the Siuslaw ranger office at (541) 271-6000.
