“The campground was quiet, the size of the site was great, and the view over the lake (from #27) was super. Having the pit toilet right there was very convenient too. In all it was a great campground which made for a nice stay. ”
“We stayed over Labor Day; it was busy but we still had our own space. By Monday night we were the only ones there and got to watch a family of river otters play and fish around the lake. Clean water, no motors, quiet. Site #1 was excellent.”

Olive Lake Campground sits at lake's edge high in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, about eight miles west of the Fremont Powerhouse and roughly 12 miles west of the old mining town of Granite. The campground offers 28 total campsites: 22 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 tent-only sites, and visitors will find 7 accessible toilet facilities scattered through the loop. There is a compact, walkable two-mile trail that loops the lake good for short hikes and for bicyclists who don't mind walking a bike around a couple of trickier spots and two docks plus a boat ramp with trailer parking for anglers and small motorboats. Important practical notes: there is no potable water at the campground and no garbage service, so plan to pack your trash out; potable water is available at the Fremont Powerhouse about seven miles east from May 15 through September 30. Because access is on Forest Service roads, expect some gravel and a remote-feel drive from Ukiah via the forest road network. The lake itself shapes most of the activity here. Anglers will find rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout as well as kokanee, and crawfish boils are a local favorite; motorized boats are allowed but wakes and jet skis are prohibited to keep the lake calm for swimmers, anglers and wildlife. Wildlife viewing is excellent look for a returning pair of nesting osprey, river otters, deer, elk and, on occasion, bear and the campground includes interpretive signs about a past beetle infestation. In season you can also find mushrooms and berries nearby, and several trailheads give longer access into the North John Day Wilderness and the Vinegar Hill Scenic Area. The setting is threaded with history too: the lake's dam and gate system once fed a wooden pipeline to the Fremont Powerhouse to supply hydroelectric power for regional mining operations, and the historic town of Granite sits within easy driving distance. Check current fees, reservation policies and road conditions with Umatilla National Forest before you go, as services and access can change with season and weather.
