“Randy was a great host. The bathroom was very clean. Good location with nice sites. River access isn’t easy.”
“Nice bar, not too buggy There is a place or mine across the river that you can’t see from the campground but if you hike a little bit, there’s a lot of rock piles over there”
“Randy does a great job maintaining the grounds and very helpful with advice for what to do. ”

Perched beside the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River at the junction of the Blue Mountain and Elkhorn Scenic Byways, North Fork John Day Campground is a small, shady lodgepole-pine enclave with 20 sites 15 that accommodate both RVs and tents and five tent-only sites. The campground sits directly adjacent to the river where perennial flow makes spring and fall the best times to watch spawning steelhead and Chinook salmon; the river access point also doubles as the trailhead for North Fork John Day River Trail #3022, with trailhead parking at the north end of the campground. Practical amenities are straightforward: three accessible vault toilets, a large trailhead parking area, an unloading ramp, and stock handling facilities including corrals, mangers and hitching posts. If you plan to bring stock, be aware that stock use is limited to the north half of the campground (sites 10 16). There is no potable water or garbage service here pack out what you pack in and the camp host or Ranger District can answer questions about current fees, reservations and seasonal conditions. The site functions as the eastern gateway to the North Fork John Day Wilderness and to a wide range of Umatilla National Forest activities: fishing (special state regulations apply), hiking, horseback riding and horse camping, wildlife viewing, berry and mushroom foraging in season, and hunting in appropriate seasons. If you prefer a scenic drive, pick up the Ukiah Granite Roadside Geology auto-tour brochure from the camp host or Ranger District and follow the nearby byways to historic Granite (about 9 miles south) or the Sumpter dredge and Fremont Powerhouse complex farther downstream. Olive Lake, roughly 20 22 miles away, offers additional boating, swimming and trail opportunities. Before you go, check with the Ranger District for up-to-date information on road access, permits or seasonal closures so you arrive prepared for the river, backcountry trails and limited services at the campground.
