“Great campsite, host was very friendly. The only issue is the mosquitos - remember to bring bug spray!”

Haystack Campground (East Shore) sits on the east shore of Haystack Reservoir in central Oregon's Crooked River National Grassland, offering open high-desert scenery of juniper and sagebrush with Mt. Jefferson visible on the horizon. The campground contains 26 sites in total: 23 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites, with paved interior roads and paved site pads that make it straightforward to pull in larger rigs. Every campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring; five vault toilets are spaced through the loop and potable water is available at an RV fill station just past the entrance station. Day-use areas with covered picnic tables provide a shaded spot for a lakeside lunch. Because the roads and pads are paved and the sites are sized to fit large rigs, the campground works for anything from solo tent trips to families towing boats. The reservoir's 240 surface acres are stocked and popular with anglers chasing largemouth bass, rainbow trout, kokanee, crappie and catfish, and paved boat ramps at Haystack (and at the nearby West Shore Campground) make launching a pleasure. Swimming is permitted, and the open water also draws seasonally rich birdlife loons and several species of grebe are common, and rarer visitors such as trumpeter swan, surf scoter, and osprey have been reported. Beyond the reservoir, recreational options include rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking and ATV use; Smith Rock State Park is about a 20-minute drive south and a dramatic overlook of the Crooked River Gorge is reachable from a rest area roughly 15 minutes from camp. Specifics on fees, reservation windows, and seasonal openings or closures aren't included here, so check with the Forest Service office that manages Crooked River National Grassland before you go for the most current policies and conditions.
