South Shore Group Campground sits on the south shore of Haystack Reservoir, a compact facility on a high desert lake a few miles east of Highway 97 near Madras. The group campground contains three distinct sites Willow, Juniper and Cottonwood each configured for both RVs and tents and able to accommodate up to 50 people. Sites are primitive: there is no water, sewer or electrical hookup, roads and parking are gravel, and each site comes with picnic tables and a metal campfire ring (all fires must remain in the provided rings). Two vault toilets serve the loop; potable water is not on site but is available about 0.5 miles away at the West Shore Recreation Area. Reservations and management moved off Recreation.gov in March 2019, so call Crook County Parks and Recreation District at 541-447-2599 to book a site or learn the cancellation policy. Note there is a locked gate at South Shore upon arrival check in with the Campground Host at West Shore so you can be admitted and the campground is open seasonally from March through November. The lake itself is small and intimate: Haystack Reservoir offers roughly 233 acres of water with 5 miles of shoreline and a surrounding 271 acres of public land created as part of the Deschutes Project. Anglers will find largemouth bass, crappie, rainbow and brown trout, kokanee and brown bullhead; two boat ramps on the east and west shores make launching small motorboats, canoes and kayaks straightforward. The site's vegetation juniper, sagebrush and bitterbrush provides screening between group sites and frames wide views across the water to the Cascades, including Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood on clear days. Wildlife watchers can expect waterfowl, deer, eagles, osprey and Great Blue Herons, and the relatively low tree canopy and roughly 3,000-foot elevation make for broad skies well suited to stargazing. Beyond the reservoir, nearby attractions include Smith Rock and Cove Palisades State Parks, Lake Billy Chinook and the Lower Deschutes Wild and Scenic River, plus local opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, OHV use, horseback riding and hunting.
