“Campground was clean, but we paid extra to stay here and have flushing toilets. Sadly tbey we’re not working. Without the bathrooms working, it would be nice to see the price be cheaper. ”
“Amazing campground host! Hard to see the deterioration of day use restroom and campground restrooms. Some of camping fee dollars need to go to upgrading those facilities especially in such a high use area.”

South Twin Lake Campground sits on the shore of a small, clear lake that occupies a shallow volcanic crater formed about 20,000 years ago when rising magma met groundwater and produced steam explosions. The lake itself covers 99 acres, averages about 33 feet deep and plunges to roughly 58 feet at its deepest; it lies just south of North Twin Lake and is a short paddle from the Deschutes arm of the much larger Wickiup Reservoir. Motorized boating is not allowed on South Twin, so the water here is best for quiet paddling, shoreline swimming and bank fishing anglers will find a different character here than at nearby reservoir launch sites. The campground is reached from Bend by a roughly 44-mile drive south to the Wickiup area and then a couple of Forest Road turns (County Road 43 onto Forest Road 42/4260), placing you in the broad lake-and-forest landscape that leads toward Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway; Lava River Cave and interpretive exhibits at Newberry are about a 45-minute drive away. The site is small and straightforward: there are 21 campsites in total, and each of those 21 sites can accommodate tent campers as well as trailers or RVs, with a picnic table and a metal fire ring provided at every site. The loop has potable water and flush toilets, and a nearby boat launch gives day-users access to the water (boat-launch parking is day use only and requires a separate recreation fee from camping fees). Practical details to note when booking: reservations are used here and once your reservation start date has begun neither Recreation.gov nor the campground manager can modify that reservation. Beyond lakeside activities at the campground, South Twin makes a convenient base for the broader recreation options of Deschutes National Forest hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, auto touring and winter sports on seasonally snow-covered routes so plan accordingly for the mix of quiet non-motorized water recreation at the lake and the wider trail and scenic driving opportunities in the area.
