“ Dock in disrepair and in unsafe condition. Dead tree hanging over camp site we preferred. Several campsites unattended by occupants. Bathrooms in dire straits.”
“The camp hosts are friendly, and check-in is quick. The grass needed to be mowed around our campsite.”

Pettit Bay Campground sits on the shore of Tenkiller Ferry Lake, about eight miles south of Tahlequah off Highway 82 with a short paved access road from Indian Road. The campground occupies clear-water lakeshore in the Cookson Hills and the broader Green Country landscape oak-hickory woodlands, bluffs and rolling foothills that frame roughly 12,500 acres of water and 130 miles of shoreline. There are 89 campsites in all: 86 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, and 3 sites are tent-only. Many sites offer electric hookups while others are non-electric; the campground provides flush toilets and hot showers, water hydrants, a dump station, a swim beach and a playground. Boat ramps with courtesy docks put you on the water quickly, and a marina with concessions sits adjacent to the campground. Campgrounds around Tenkiller are managed by the Corps of Engineers, the State of Oklahoma and private concessionaires and range from primitive to full-hookup, so check with the managing office for current fees, reservation procedures and seasonal availability before you arrive. Recreation at Pettit Bay is heavily water-oriented: the lake supports boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and sailing prevailing winds and sheltered coves make it a good spot for sailboats and the clear water draws scuba divers who prize visibility. Anglers chase black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish, and the trout stream below the dam is one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma, regularly stocked with rainbow trout. On land, three nature trails (from about 1.25 miles to a bit over 2 miles) offer rock outcrops, scenic overlooks and wildlife viewing deer, turkey and migratory birds such as bald eagles and white pelicans are commonly seen along the flyway. Hunting is allowed on most project lands except within park boundaries and near the dam; principal game includes whitetail deer, turkey, rabbit and squirrel, and hunters should obtain the project hunting map and follow state regulations. Nearby attractions include Tenkiller State Park and its scuba diving area, the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, and the historic city of Tahlequah, while the upper Illinois River offers canoeing and rafting and the lower river is known for trout fishing.
