Chicken Creek Campground sits along the clear water of Tenkiller Ferry Lake in the Cookson Hills region of eastern Oklahoma, where oak-hickory woods, bluffs and rolling hills frame long stretches of shoreline. The lake itself covers about 12,500 acres and supports ten marinas and more than 20 boat launching ramps, which helps explain why water sports dominate here: boating, water skiing, sailing in the lake's sheltered coves, scuba diving in unusually clear water, and fishing for black bass, white and striped bass, crappie and catfish. The trout stream below the dam is one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma and is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, and three nearby nature trails (from roughly 1.25 to over 2 miles) offer rock formations, overlooks and wildlife viewing deer, turkey and seasonal migrants such as bald eagles and loons are commonly seen. Project lands are open to public hunting except within parks and around the dam and control structures; state regulations apply and hunters should consult the project office or the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation for maps and legal details. As one of the more popular campgrounds on the lake, Chicken Creek combines modern facilities with straightforward lakeside access. The campground offers 103 total campsites 101 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and 2 are tent-only and every campsite provides electric hookups; group shelters also have electricity. On-site amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, potable water hydrants, a dump station, a swim beach, a playground and a boat ramp complex, while the dozen marinas around the lake frequently provide boat and personal-watercraft rentals and several feature floating restaurants. Practical details such as fees, reservation windows and seasonal closures change periodically, so campers should check with the Corps of Engineers at Tenkiller Ferry Lake or the managing concessionaire for up-to-date reservation policies, rates and any access requirements before arriving.
