About

Sandy Cove Campground sits at the north end of Canton Dam on the North Canadian River, about a five-mile drive from the small town of Canton and accessible from State Highway 58A. The campground occupies a shaded stand of blackjack and post oak, so campsites have a woodland feel even though none of them sit right on the shoreline; the broad, gently sloping sandy swim beach and water-access points are a short walk or drive away. There are 36 sites in all: 35 sites equipped to handle both RVs and tents with electrical hookups, plus one tent-only site. Basic comforts are on site flush and pit toilets, coin or free showers as posted, drinking water and a large day-use group picnic shelter sits nearby for family gatherings. Sandy Cove is one of the Corps of Engineers' multi-use areas at Canton Lake, so expect a mix of campers, boaters and day visitors; check the Corps' site or contact the local office for current fees, reservation procedures and season-specific rules before you arrive. The lake and surrounding project lands are where Sandy Cove really comes alive: Canton Lake is a top destination for anglers (notably walleye, with an annual Walleye Rodeo held in mid-May), and the water in the stretch paralleling the dam is commonly used for water skiing, tubing and personal watercraft because the winds are often lighter there. The broader Canton Lake recreation area adds a nature trail, overlook visitor center, outdoor amphitheater, scenic drive across the dam (with three fishing pullouts/jetty parking areas) and an active prairie dog town for wildlife viewing. Hunters and birders will note the adjacent 14,862-acre Canton Wildlife Management Area managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, open for quail, deer, turkey, waterfowl and small-game seasons. For errands and off-site dining, several restaurants are within about three miles of the lake and there's a casino and a nine-hole golf course nearby; Roman Nose and Glass Mountains state parks are roughly a half-hour drive if you want to extend your outing.
