WHITE MOUNTAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Waterville Campground sits at the edge of the Mad River in the southern White Mountains, a compact facility that works well as a base for exploring the Pemigewasset Wilderness and nearby rec areas. The campground's 25 sites are arranged around a single paved loop and are spaced to give a feeling of separation under a canopy of northern hardwoods; 19 sites are listed for both RVs and tents while six are tent-only. On-site basics include vault restrooms and drinking water, and additional services such as showers and laundry are available within a short drive. The campground is reached from Interstate 93 via Highway 49 east and a short turn onto Tripoli Road, making it an easy stop for both day-trippers and people moving between trailheads. Because site amenities and seasonal schedules are managed by the White Mountain National Forest, campers should check the Forest Service website for current fees, reservation rules, opening dates and any vehicle-length or hookup restrictions before arriving. The area around Waterville is rich with outdoor options: a short walk brings you to trailheads for the Drakes Brook Trail (4.4 miles) and the Sandwich Trail (3.9 miles), which form a convenient loop for day hikes that start near the campground. The Mad River runs adjacent to the site and is a local spot for brook trout fishing, while more adventurous paddlers can reach a 2.1-mile stretch of class I II whitewater on the Winnipesaukee River a bit farther afield. Nearby towns and resorts add variety Waterville Valley Resort offers summer concerts, dining, guided horseback rides and mountain bike rentals, and local beaches such as Gilford Beach, Dixon Point and Sandwich Beach are available for swimming and picnicking. Wildlife viewing is a regular part of the experience here (moose, white-tailed deer and black bear are present, and the White Mountains support nearly 200 bird species including the rare Bicknell's thrush), and the broader national forest supports year-round activities from skiing and winter sports to biking, fire-lookout stays and overnight cabin options.
