“Compact, pretty little campground in a great location for hiking along the Kancamagus or in Franconia Notch. Relatively close to town if you want to get back to civilization. Caretakers were nice, bathrooms were clean.”
“This is such a beautiful, remote, and central location. We love how it’s small and built to be a quiet place. ”

Big Rock Campground sits along the Kancamagus Highway just off Exit 32 of Interstate 93, giving campers quick access to the central White Mountain National Forest. The site is named for a large rock you pass shortly after entering; the campground itself is a stand of mature trees that provides shade and a feeling of separation between pitches. There are 27 individual campsites total: nine that accommodate both RVs and tents and 18 tent-only sites. Each site includes a picnic table, a defined tent pad and a turnout for parking; most sites have parking space suitable for small trailers and motorhomes, though eight sites share a common parking area rather than individual pull-throughs. There are no water, electrical, or sewage hookups, and vault toilets are the only restroom facility on site, so plan to bring your own water and be self-sufficient. A fee is required and collected through a self-service pay system; campsites are offered both first-come, first-served and by reservation. The campground is a practical base for a wide range of recreation in the Kancamagus corridor and greater White Mountain National Forest. Within easy reach are river access points on the East Branch of the Pemigewasset, small swimming holes such as Upper Lady's Bath, and short trailheads that lead to features like Otter Rocks, the Greely Ponds area and Franconia Falls; longer drives put you at The Flume, The Basin, Franconia Notch and Cannon Mountain. The forest supports biking, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing and even winter sports on nearby routes and trails, and the campground's roadside location makes it convenient for sightseeing drives along the highway. Facilities are basic bring supplies, warm clothing and bear-aware food storage and the campground's compact, wooded sites make it a good choice for campers who want quick access to trailheads and scenic stops rather than full-service RV hookups.
