About

Campton Campground sits on the southern edge of the White Mountain National Forest, an easy pull-off from U.S. Highway 93 and roughly a two-hour drive north of Boston; from Highway 93 take exit 28 and follow Mad River Road (Highway 49) east about 2 miles to reach the site. The facility has 55 campsites in total 40 sites set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and 15 designated tent-only sites and despite its size the camps are spaced far enough apart to feel private. Campsites sit in a mixed stand of white pine and northern hardwoods that cast steady shade, and the 30-acre Campton Pond and the Mad River are steps away. Basic amenities include vault and flush restrooms (sites 33 58 are closest to the flush toilets), drinking water, and coin-operated hot showers; anglers will find brook trout, pickerel, brown bullhead and yellow perch in the pond and river (note: no power boats are permitted on the pond). The campground runs family-friendly programming during the summer nature programs are offered on Saturday nights in July and August and the overall layout and nearby activities make it a popular choice for families. Beyond the campsite, the White Mountains offer extensive outdoor options: roughly 1,200 miles of hiking trails region-wide (including about 160 miles of the Appalachian Trail), plentiful mountain-biking routes, horseback riding, picnicking and spots for swimming and wildlife viewing. The wider area supports both alpine and nordic skiing four alpine and five nordic ski areas which also stage summer events, interpretive trails, mountain-biking and concerts, so recreation opportunities can be year-round depending on season. For low-key family breaks from the woods, nearby towns provide miniature golf, a water-sports park, train rides and gondolas. Wildlife is part of the local scene moose, white-tailed deer and black bear are present and the forest hosts nearly 200 bird species, including the rare Bicknell's thrush so check current season dates, fees and reservation policies with the White Mountain National Forest office before you go, and follow forest-service guidance on food storage and bear safety.
