“Site looked great, especially towards the end of peak season. The water pump was not working when we stayed in April and it was not working on this trip either (September) -- so hopefully this can be fixed. I would plan for an outage just in case.”

Cove Creek Upper Group Camp sits along Cove Creek in Pisgah National Forest and is one of two group camping areas in this stretch of the southern Appalachians. The site feels very much like a mountain basecamp: hardwood forests slope up around the clearing, and both Cove Creek and the larger Davidson River are steps away for anyone who likes to follow water for scenery or cold-water trout fishing. A network of hiking and mountain-biking trails radiates out from the area, including a creek-side path that leads to a waterfall, so days here can be spent hiking, riding, or reading in the shade between outings. Interpretive programs may be available on request, and the city of Asheville with galleries, restaurants, and services is roughly an hour away for supplies or an off-night meal. The campground consists of a single group site (Total campsites: 1) that can accommodate up to 60 people and is set up to take both tents and RVs, with picnic tables, grills, campfire rings, vault toilets and potable water on site. The facility is open year-round, but access requires driving on Forest Road 475A and crossing two creek fords; heavy rains can make those crossings impassable, so a high-clearance vehicle or four-wheel drive is recommended and all crossings are attempted at the user's own risk.
