McDougal Lake Road (Forest Road 106)
Open in Google Maps ↗
McDougal Lake Campground sits on the western side of Isabella, reached via Forest Road 106 about 10 miles out of town, and offers a quiet, wood-framed base for paddling, angling and simple lakeside swimming in the central part of Superior National Forest. The campground fronts a 323-acre lake ringed in birch, maple and pine at roughly 1,800 feet elevation; a sandy swimming beach, a boat ramp and shoreline access make it easy to spend an afternoon on the water pursuing walleye and northern pike or watching waterfowl and other wildlife that frequent the wild rice beds. There is a short, one-mile hiking trail tied to the campground, but note that that trail and campsites 17 and 19 were closed after the Greenwood Fire in 2021 and remain closed until further notice. Superior National Forest beyond the campground provides year-round options from Boundary Waters access to dozens of lake access areas, fishing piers, swimming beaches and scenic byways so McDougal is a practical stop for extending day trips across the Arrowhead region. The facility has 21 campsites total: 17 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites. Eight of the sites can be reserved in advance while 13 are first-come, first-served; five of those first-come sites are also available for long-term rental through the Tofte Ranger District (call 218-663-8060 for details). Sites are separated by woods for privacy, and utilities are straightforward: potable water is supplied by a solar-powered pump station and vault toilets serve the campground. Fees are $15 per night for one vehicle and one trailer, with an additional $7.50 charge for each extra vehicle or trailer; you can prepay that fee when you reserve online or put payment in the campground fee tube, and extra vehicles must be parked on the spur. For facility-specific questions or to arrange long-term rentals, contact the Tofte Ranger District at 218-663-8060.
