“I had a very peaceful stay. It’s a quiet and well kept campground. ”
“This is by far one of my most favorite campgrounds to stay at!! So beautiful and secluded!! The campsites are always clean and the outhouses are the cleanest I have ever used. Also, the camp hosts are very personable and respectful of privacy. Very nice!!! 🤩”
“This park is a gem! Great water access on site - we canoed 2 of our 3 full days. Great campsite! Campground hosts we were very nice people and kept the park in great shape - including super clean bathrooms!”

South Kawishiwi River Campground sits roughly 10 miles south of Ely on State Highway 1, on the Kawishiwi River where calm, cold water threads through mixed aspen, birch and conifer forest. The facility contains 31 campsites in all: 30 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site, and some sites offer electric hookups while others do not. Sites are described as spacious, shaded and fairly private; basic services on site include vault toilets, drinking water, trash collection and firewood available for purchase. There is a reservable group day-use picnic area that holds up to 35 people for family gatherings or parties. For planning practicalities seasonal openings, nightly fees, and reservations consult the Superior National Forest or Recreation.gov, and note that permits are required if you paddle north into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The river is the campground's defining feature and the main draw for paddlers and anglers. Canoeists can follow the Kawishiwi south to Birch Lake or head north into the Boundary Waters (permits required for BWCA travel); canoe rentals can be arranged through the campground host and a boat ramp is on site. Along the shore there's a grassy beach for swimming, and a one-mile Kawishiwi River Forest Trail offers an easy hike through riparian woods. Anglers fish for northern pike, perch and walleye, while birders and wildlife watchers can look for loons, bald eagles, moose and black bear in the surrounding national forest. Beyond the campground, Superior National Forest provides extensive recreation auto touring, biking, additional boating and fishing access, multiple swimming beaches and winter-sports opportunities so use the Forest Service recreation guides and maps to plan routes and day trips.
