Birch Lake Campground sits on the wooded edge of Birch Lake, about 13 miles from Ely in Superior National Forest, where aspen and birch stand between most campsites and the water. The site layout is compact but thoughtfully separated into two loops, with a total of 32 camping opportunities: 30 sites set up to serve both RVs and tents, and two glamping-style camper cabins in the south loop. Each campsite is shaded and comes with a picnic table, tent pad and a campfire ring with grill; vault toilets and a hand pump provide basic sanitation and drinking water, and firewood is available for purchase. The north loop includes a group site that can handle up to 45 people and features eight back-in parking spurs and an open play area. The two camper cabins are two-room units with a back bedroom containing two sets of bunk beds (four beds) plus a main room with a table, chairs and a futon; a front porch and a heater extend the camping season, but guests must bring their own linens and supplies and should be aware the cabins have no electricity, running water or indoor kitchen facilities. Recreation on and around Birch Lake is straightforward and water-focused: a public boat ramp gives easy access for boaters and anglers, and there are no horsepower restrictions on the lake, which covers about 7,628 acres and supports northern pike, perch, crappie and walleye. Shoreline access makes canoeing and paddling convenient from the campground, and families often pick berries in summer and early fall in the surrounding forest. Beyond the lake, Birch Lake Campground is a handy jumping-off point for exploring the larger Superior National Forest and the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; the forest offers dozens of lake accesses, fishing piers and hiking opportunities along scenic byways. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings and trail or route maps, check the U.S. Forest Service recreation pages before you go.
