“Beautiful location and site. Our only problem was that someone was set up in the spot we reserved. And there was no campground host to go to. But this may have been due to the govt shutdown.”
“Absolutely loved it! Gorgeous views and close to the trails. Loved how close it was to the lighthouse.”

Hurricane River Campground sits on the south shore of Lake Superior within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Grand Marais along County Road H-58. The campground is split into Upper and Lower areas 10 sites in the Upper and 12 in the Lower, for a total of 22 drive-in campsites and every site is designated to accommodate both tents and RVs or trailers. Sites are rustic: there are no electric or sewer hookups and no individual water hookups, but the campground provides well water, picnic tables, tent pads, and fire rings with grill grates; vault (pit) toilets are available and a few sites are handicap accessible. Generators are allowed in some places but parts of the campground are generator-free, cell reception is typically limited, and tent-style enclosures for portable campsite toilets are prohibited. All campsites must be reserved in advance at $25.00 per night; Senior and Access Pass holders receive a 50% discount (enter your pass number when you make the reservation). The Lower Campground also serves as the trailhead for the Au Sable Light Station, a roughly 3-mile (5 km) round trip stroll that delivers close views of Lake Superior, Jacobsville sandstone outcrops, and visible shipwreck remains along the shore. Beyond the campground, Pictured Rocks offers about 100 miles (161 km) of trails to waterfalls, beaches, sand dunes, inland lakes and high cliff overlooks, plus opportunities for boating, paddling, fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing, climbing, and diving where conditions permit. Boat and kayak tours operate from nearby communities, and pontoons and other rentals are available if you want to explore the shoreline from the water; note that the park's sandstone cliffs rise 50 to 200 feet (15 61 m) straight from the lake and weather on Lake Superior changes quickly, so check marine forecasts before launching. Access the west side of the park from Munising via M-28 and M-94 or from Grand Marais via M-77; many park roads and spur accesses close in winter due to snow, so confirm road and facility status if you plan a shoulder-season visit.
