Michigan Valley Campground sits on the eastern shore of Pomona Lake, a 4,000-acre reservoir set into the rolling hills, mixed grasslands, croplands and pockets of timber of eastern Kansas. The lake is the focus here: anglers and boaters will find plenty of opportunity for walleye, crappie and channel catfish, and the water is used for all kinds of recreation from power boating to quieter wildlife viewing; bald eagles, white-tailed deer, Canada geese and wild turkey are commonly seen around the shoreline. Hikers and equestrians can follow several nearby trails short interpretive walks like Deer Creek Nature Trail and Witches' Broom Trail, or the extended Black Hawk Trail, a 33-mile loop with multiple trailheads that's popular with hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers. The campground is shaded and feels sheltered by trees along the shore; it's roughly a 24-mile drive south from Topeka via US-75 and then east on K-268, or reached by following K-268 to Pomona Dam Road and crossing the dam to the park entrance. The campground itself contains 81 campsites in total, of which 78 are set up for both RVs and tents and 3 are tent-only sites, arranged across seven loops A (25), B (4), C (13), D (4), E (5), F (12) and G (14). About 51 sites have electric and water hookups; you'll also find three group picnic shelters with electric, flush and vault toilets, a shower building, a playground, a basketball court, a swim beach and a dump station on site. Michigan Valley works well for family camping, hunters and people combining lake days with trail use; boat ramps and other lake facilities are part of the wider Pomona Lake recreation area. Practical details such as fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings can change, so call the park office or check the official state park site before you go; the small town of Lyndon is about 20 minutes away for limited dining and supplies and hosts several local historic sites.
