Coeur d'Alene Campground sits along Melvern Lake at the eastern edge of Kansas' Flint Hills, where roughly 7,000 acres of water meet about 18,000 acres of public land. The lake's upper Marais des Cygnes River valley is busy in summer with boating, swimming and water sports off a public boat ramp, dock and marina; anglers pursue walleye, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, black and white bass, and both striped and smallmouth bass, and there's a fish-cleaning station on site. The surrounding Flint Hills are one of the last intact stretches of tallgrass prairie big bluestem, switchgrass and Indian grass dominate the rolling landscape while the south side of the lake is somewhat wooded; shade within the campground itself is limited. Two trails serve the campground directly: the Breakwater Trail and the four-mile Tall Grass Heritage Trail, which links Coeur d'Alene to Arrow Rock Campground, and the broader park acreage supports hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting (deer, quail, turkey, ducks, rabbits and squirrels), horseback riding, biking, auto touring and other outdoor programs and concessions. The campground contains 50 total campsites 48 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites arranged across three loop areas (CDEA loop with 48 sites, a one-site Beach Loop and a one-site Day Use Loop). Site options range from an accessible site equipped with 50-amp electric, water and sewer hookups to numerous sites offering 30-amp electric and water and several basic 30-amp sites; a dump station, showers, flush and vault toilets and drinking water are provided. For day use there are two group picnic shelters (both with electric), several family picnic spots on a first-come basis, three playgrounds, an overlook and a swim beach. Note the park enforces the national no-show policy: if you do not check in with the park attendant within 24 hours of your reservation check-in time your site will be released and you will be charged $20 plus the first night's fee. To plan arrival, seasonal conditions or current availability, call Melvern Lake information at (877) 444-6777 or (785) 549-3318; from US-75 the campground is a short drive south at the Melvern exit and then west along the parkway to Coeur d'Alene Parkway.
