“It would have been nice if the shelter would have been clean. Another plus would be having the area mowed instead of having to navigate 1-3 foot tall grass. It also would have been nice if the women’s restroom would have been accessible.”

Hillsboro Cove sits on the shore of Marion Reservoir and is built for people who want quick water access and simple, well-equipped campsites. The campground contains 53 sites that are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, each outfitted with a picnic table, grill, sun shelter and electric hookups; there is also a single group camping area with a large shelter that can hold up to 80 people. A dedicated boat ramp at Hillsboro Cove puts anglers on the 6,200-acre lake in minutes the reservoir supports channel catfish, walleye, white bass, wipers and white crappie and the waterfront sites make early-morning fishing and evening water-watching easy parts of the day. Marion Reservoir is ringed by roughly 6,000 acres of public land, so hunting, wildlife viewing and a sense of open space are part of the experience here: pheasants, quail, rabbits, turkeys and white-tailed deer are common on the public hunting areas, and a waterfowl refuge attracts ducks and geese. Beyond fishing and boating, the broader recreation area supports camping, hiking, picnicking, playgrounds, water sports and other outdoor activities; Cottonwood Point, one of the other park units, even has a one-mile Willow Walk Nature Trail. For practical matters fees, reservations, seasonal availability and maps (including the map to the public hunting lands) contact the Marion Reservoir project office at 2105 Pawnee Rd, Marion, KS, or call 620-382-2101. The campground is easily reached off Highway 56 between Marion and Hillsboro (about five miles from Marion), with the park entrance just off Nighthawk Road.
