Opossum Creek Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Lake Shelbyville a few miles north of the town of Shelbyville, where oak and hickory woods slope down to views of the lake's broad water. The campground contains 65 total campsites: 48 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 17 tent-only sites, and most of the RV/tent sites have electrical hookups while several non-electric tent sites remain available for a quieter stay. Facilities at the campground include flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station for rigs, and a playground for children, plus an accessible fishing dock on a small, stocked pond specifically for anglers age 12 and under. The setting is shady and varied prairie flowers in spring and summer, a palette of red, orange and gold in fall and wildlife is common: songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors are seen along the shoreline, while cottontail rabbits, white-tailed deer, gray and fox squirrels, muskrat and mink move through the understory. Recreation at Opossum Creek ties directly into the larger Lake Shelbyville system. The lake supports year-round boat access and fishing for catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, walleye, white bass and bluegill, and the campground is a convenient base for swimming at nearby beaches, picnics and day hikes. Hunting areas within a short drive attract hunters after quail, rabbit, pheasant, deer, dove, turkey, waterfowl and woodcock, and nearby attractions include Wolf Creek State Park, Woods Lake Waterfowl Refuge, the Okaw Bluff Wetlands Complex and the privately owned Eagle Creek Resort with lodging and an 18-hole golf course. Practical details such as current fees, reservation windows and seasonal campground openings change from year to year; check the Lake Shelbyville or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website or call the park office before you go to confirm reservations and up-to-date policies.
