About

Coon Creek sits on the western shore of Lake Shelbyville and feels like a small lakeside neighborhood of campsites shaded by oak and hickory. The campground contains 178 sites in all 166 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 12 that are tent-only and every site comes with electrical hookups. Facilities are straightforward and family-friendly: flush toilets and hot showers, a dump station, a boat ramp, a swimming beach and a playground. A 0.7-mile nature trail within the facility gives a quick loop for morning walks, and the shoreline and wooded sites mean plenty of dappled shade in summer and striking leaf color in fall; prairie flowers appear across the landscape in spring and summer. Coon Creek is a good base for the wider Lake Shelbyville experience: the lake's 11,100 acres of water and shore support boating (boat access is provided year-round), fishing for catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, muskie, walleye, white bass and bluegill, picnicking and birding. Hunting areas and wildlife refuges are a short drive away, and nearby attractions include Wolf Creek State Park, Woods Lake Waterfowl Refuge and the Okaw Bluff Wetlands Complex; lodging and an 18-hole golf course are available at the privately owned Eagle Creek Resort. About half the sites at Coon Creek are reservable, so plan ahead for holiday weekends and check current fees and reservation details online before you go; the campground is reached from Shelbyville by heading north on State Route 128 to the lake's western shore.
