“Loved having the loop for our group. Too much thru traffic that wasn’t in our group. Camp grounds needs fixing up. Disappointed with conditions. ”

Shagbark Group Area is a single, large group campsite tucked into the back portion of the North Sandusky Campground on Rend Lake's shore. The site occupies a mature forest setting where deer and wild turkey commonly move through the trees, and it opens onto the lake landscape that supports boat ramps, beaches, picnic sites and miles of trails across the park's mix of fields, forest and water. Because Rend Lake is a broad recreation area some 20,633 acres of water and roughly 19,523 acres of land Shagbark is well placed for a variety of outings: boaters and anglers can reach the water quickly via nearby ramps, hikers and wildlife viewers can use the surrounding trails and shorelines, and other area attractions such as the 27-hole Rend Lake Golf Course, the Southern Illinois Artisans Shop and the privately owned Rend Lake Resort are only a short drive away. Although the campground's capacity is sized for groups up to about 200 campers the verified campsite inventory lists this as one combined site that supports both RVs and tents, so parties should plan to reserve the entire group area rather than individual spots. On-site amenities include electric hookups, flush toilets and drinking water to keep a large group comfortable, but other details such as fees, seasonal availability and reservation procedures aren't provided here; contact the Rend Lake visitor center or the park's reservation system for current policies. You'll find the North Sandusky Campground accessed from Route 154 off I-57 (exit 77), with Shagbark located toward the rear of that campground, making it a place to gather near the lake while still surrounded by woods and the everyday rhythms of the larger Rend Lake recreation area.
