Blanchard Island Recreation Area sits on the backwaters of the upper Mississippi (Pools 11 22), one of fifteen shorefront campgrounds that make up the river project. The site has a quiet, backcountry character: you reach it after roughly 2.5 miles on a gravel levee road off 176th Avenue west of New Boston, IL, and the approach helps explain why people come here for solitude, wildlife and river access rather than full-service comforts. Wildlife viewing is a prime draw bald eagles, ducks, pileated woodpeckers, deer and the occasional muskrat or otter are commonly seen and fall brings deer hunters who use the campground as a boat-access base. Anglers favor Blanchard Island for catfish; a concrete boat ramp puts you on the chute and the river's catfish holes, and the river-edge setting offers peaceful vistas of Blanchard Chute and the surrounding bottomlands. Expect bugs in the warm months and bring repellent. The recreation area operates a single first-come, first-served campsite that accepts both RVs and tents, and that site comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring; concrete vault toilets are on site and potable water is available at multiple hydrants, with a dump station also provided. Payment is handled on arrival through the Muscatine Ranger Station's "Scan & Pay" system: you must be physically at the campground to purchase and claim the site using the QR code and the Recreation.gov mobile app, cash is no longer accepted (credit card only), and the open-fee season runs May 15 through October 15. There are no refunds or modifications once payment is made, so plan accordingly.
