About

Shady Creek Campground spreads across 22 acres along the banks of the Upper Mississippi River, where mature trees shade the campsites and provide broad views downriver. The developed campground offers 56 sites in all 53 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites each equipped with 50-amp electric hookups, a campfire ring and a picnic table. Modern comfort stations with flush toilets and showers are on-site, and families will find a playground and boat ramp within easy walking distance of the loops. A short nature trail threads through the property to shore-fishing access, and open lawns and a horseshoe pit make picnicking and casual play popular daytime activities. Fishing and bird life shape most visitors' days here: anglers chase channel catfish most often, with bluegill, walleye and northern pike also present in the river, and boaters put in at the campground ramp to work downstream or fish the pools. Winter brings concentrated eagle-watching along the river, and the larger Mississippi River project offers interpretive programs and other recreation opportunities such as hiking and wildlife viewing. If you want to explore farther, Wildcat Den State Park lies just north with hiking trails and the historic Pine Creek Grist Mill, while the Mark Twain National Wildlife Refuge is about a 40-minute drive downstream. The campground is reached from the Davenport area by traveling roughly 17 miles west on Highway 22 to the Shady Creek turnoff; for current fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability, check with the managing office before you go.
