Perched at about 6,900 feet on Scout Mountain roughly 13 miles south of Pocatello the Scout Mountain Campground sits on the Bannock Range amid a mixed forest of Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine and aspen that provides partial shade and a late-summer display of wildflowers. The site contains 14 individual campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents (sites are a mix of single, double and one triple configuration) and a separate large group site that can handle up to 100 people; individual sites come with picnic tables, campfire rings, tent pads, lantern posts and utility serving tables, while the group site adds grills and a campfire ring with bench seating. Basic services are provided on site: vault toilets and drinking water. Access is straightforward from the Mink Creek/Bannock Highway corridor south of Pocatello via the East Fork Mink Creek road; reservations are managed through the NRRS, and changing or canceling a reservation carries a $10 service fee (late cancellations may incur additional charges see the NRRS Reservation Policy for details). The campground is well placed for trail-based recreation: a paved, one-mile Scout Mountain Nature Trail loops directly through the campground and leads to several overlooks, the East Fork Mink Creek Trail starts inside the site, and the Crestline Trail is nearby, making the area popular with hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and dirt-bike riders. Birders and wildlife viewers will find good opportunities here and throughout the Mink Creek area watch for Mountain Bluebirds, Western Scrub-Jays, Juniper Titmice, Bushtits, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Green-tailed and Spotted Towhees and even Calliope Hummingbirds. Within a short drive, Cherry Springs Nature Area (under 6 miles) offers a spring, a stream for fishing, paved interpretive trails and picnic facilities, and the Mink Creek Nordic Center (about 5 miles away) provides summer hiking and horseback riding access and groomed cross-country ski trails in winter.
