Priest River Campground sits on the banks of the Priest River in a stand of firs, cedars and pines just upstream from where the river meets the Pend Oreille. The river and nearby Lake Pend Oreille give the site a strong water-focused character: kayaking, fishing and swimming are common from the campground's shoreline, and a swim beach and boat ramp in the day-use area make launching and cooling off easy. The setting opens into a glacial-carved valley that stretches 65 miles behind Albeni Falls Dam, with surrounding mountain ridges that rise to about 6,500 feet and lake basins plunging over 1,200 feet in places conditions that attract bald eagles, osprey, a wide variety of songbirds and deer. The adjacent Priest River Wildlife Area is a draw for anglers and birders, and the Albeni Falls Visitor Center a short drive away offers exhibits on the dam and daily summer tours. Practical campground details are straightforward: there are 21 campsites in all, with 20 sites configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 1 site designated for tents only, and the loop is served by flush toilets and hot showers. The day-use portion of the recreation area includes a picnic shelter, playground, softball field and a large grassy area for family games in addition to the swim beach and boat ramp. Beyond the campground you can extend outings into the larger Lake Pend Oreille recreation offerings auto touring, hiking, boating, water sports, environmental education, historic and cultural sites, and wildlife viewing are all part of the park experience. Priest River Recreation Area is about 1 mile east of the town of Priest River on Highway 2 (the park is the first road on the right after crossing the river and is locally known as the "Mudhole"); the nearby town provides gas and grocery services. For current fees, reservation policies, seasonal opening dates and any access requirements, check with the Albeni Falls Visitor Center or park offices before you go.
