Pioneer Park Campground sits at about 2,000 feet on the south edge of Colville National Forest, a compact site of 17 campsites set among groves of ponderosa and white pine, hemlock and grand fir. Fifteen sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents while two are tent-only, and each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring and a tent pad. Gravel parking spurs are large enough for any RV size, and vault toilets and drinking water are provided; there's also a picnic shelter, a boat ramp and a marked swimming area along the Pend Oreille River. The campsites are roomy and shaded, with an understory of wild rose and thimbleberry that gives the loops a quietly wooded character rather than an open meadow feel. Recreation at Pioneer Park centers on the river and a short, interpretive boardwalk: the 0.3-mile Pioneer Park Heritage Trail has 12 displays describing the history of the Kalispel Tribe and offers clear views down to the Pend Oreille. Anglers come here for bass and trout, boaters can launch from the on-site ramp, and the swimming area is handy for warm-weather visitors. Newport is only a few minutes away for groceries, restaurants and family stops such as Little People's Park, and the campground is reached just north of town off U.S. Highway 2 onto LeClerc Road. Fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings aren't specified here, so check with Colville National Forest (or recreation.gov) before you go for the latest information on permits, seasonal access and any campground notices.
