Old Federal Campground sits on the eastern shore of Lake Sidney Lanier in northern Georgia, where the foothills of the Blue Ridge give way to long, forested stretches of shoreline and wide views across the lake's aqua-blue water. The reservoir was formed in 1956 with the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River; Lake Lanier now encompasses about 38,000 surface acres and roughly 692 miles of shoreline, with dozens of Corps-operated parks and marinas around the lake. At the campground itself there are 82 sites in total: 58 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 3 RV-only sites, and 21 tent-only sites. Many sites provide electric and water hookups (no sewer), and campers have access to restrooms and bathhouses, laundry facilities, two picnic shelters, a dump station, a swimming beach and an on-site boat ramp. The location is staffed call (470) 774-7881 to reach local personnel and reservations are handled through recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777; cancellations must be made through the online/phone reservation system or in person at the gatehouse (phone calls to the gatehouse to cancel are not accepted). The campground is a good base for both quiet lakeside camping and active water recreation. Onsite and nearby opportunities include shoreline fishing, swimming and picnicking, plus trail and bike riding through the surrounding terrain; out on the water you'll find boating, kayaking, wakeboarding and other water-sports options. The broader Lake Lanier area supports a wide range of activities from marinas and concession services to horseback riding, wildlife viewing, playgrounds and specialized sport sites and features Lake Lanier Islands and other Corps and county parks a short drive away. If you're planning a trip, expect a mix of wooded campsites and easy lake access, and remember to book through the national reservation system in advance during peak summer weekends.
