Sawnee Campground sits on the north side of Buford Dam, where the forested foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge meet Lake Sidney Lanier's aqua-blue water. The campground has 58 sites in total 41 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 17 tent-only sites arrayed among pines and mixed hardwoods with views or easy walks down to a sandy swimming beach and the on-site boat ramp. Facilities include restrooms/bathouses, laundry, and a playground, and there are a number of walk-in tent spots as well as sites with utility hookups (note that sewer hookups are not provided). From the campground you can see the dam and large stretches of the lake; Lake Lanier itself covers about 38,000 surface acres and offers roughly 690 miles of shoreline and more than 100 small islands, giving a distinctly aquatic, wooded feel to day and evening activities. The campground is a practical base for water-centered recreation and for exploring nearby preserves and towns. On-site access makes boating, kayaking, fishing and swimming straightforward, and the larger Lake Lanier area supports a wide range of activities water sports, hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, picnicking and environmental-education opportunities among them. Westbank Overlook and Sawnee Mountain Preserve are a short drive away for scenic drives and wildlife spotting, and Cumming supplies grocery, dining and fairground amenities if you need supplies or a night out. Reservations are handled through recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777; cancellations must be made through the online/phone reservation system or in person at the gatehouse (cancellation requests phoned to the gatehouse will not be honored).
