Monument Lake Campground sits along the edge of Monument Lake within Big Cypress National Preserve, where freshwater swamp habitat gives way to open campsites that look out over the water. The campground contains 38 sites in total: 28 are designated for RV use and 10 are tent sites. RV campsites ring the lake, so most rigs have a water view but are described as open with limited to no shade plan for sun and bring awnings or shade gear. Tent sites are set apart from the RV loop, tucked closer to the campground host and the restroom for a slightly quieter, more sheltered feel. Basic comforts at the campground include flush toilets and drinking water, and fire rings are provided at the tent sites; many sites also include a picnic table for meals outdoors. Monument Lake is easily reached from the Tamiami Trail (US 41) around mile marker 59 between Naples and Miami, and for facility-specific questions fees, reservations or seasonal access call the preserve office at (239) 631-9988. Because Monument Lake is centrally located in Big Cypress, it's a handy base for the preserve's wide range of outdoor pursuits: fishing and hiking close to the campground, boardwalk exploration, and access to longer biking and auto-tour routes across the preserve. The broader Big Cypress landscape supports a mix of tropical and temperate plant communities and abundant wildlife wildlife viewing and photography are common pursuits here, and the preserve is also home to the endangered Florida panther. Nearby points of interest that make good day trips include the Oasis Visitor Center, the Miccosukee Cultural Center, Shark Valley, and Clyde Butcher's Art Gallery. If you prefer quieter tent camping near facilities, use the smaller tent loop next to the host; if you're in an RV, expect open lakeside views but little natural shade. For up-to-date details on site fees, reservation policies, and any seasonal restrictions, contact the preserve at the number above before you go.
