“Small but clean and quiet. We were the only ones there. A decent place to sleepover on a road trip. Plenty of mosquitoes, be prepared for that.”
“Quiet primitive campground with the cleanest pit toilets I have ever used. Dark sky makes for great stargazing.”
“great hosts and wide open campsites. great for any rig or combination of tents. Dark sky park so the night sky was amazing. We will be back. ”

Mitchell Landing Campground sits on a secondary gravel access road within the Stairstep backcountry of Big Cypress National Preserve, where the swamp's freshwaters feed the larger Everglades ecosystem along Florida's southwest coast. The site is primitive and low-profile: 12 campsites in total 9 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites each with a gravel or grass pad, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Vault toilets are provided and there is shared food storage, but there is no potable water on site, so plan to bring everything you need for cooking and drinking. Cell service is limited in this part of the preserve, the campground is open seasonally from August 15 through April 15, and reservations are highly encouraged; nightly fee is $24. For facility-specific questions call (239) 631-9988. Recreation at Mitchell Landing is rooted in the preserve's wild, watery landscape: the campground is one of the primary launch points for airboat users and lies in the only backcountry unit open to airboats, with ORV and airboat trails accessible directly from the loop. Anglers can fish nearby waters (check myfwc.com for current regulations), hikers can pick up backcountry routes and access the popular loop-road scenic drive right next to the site, and the area offers solid wildlife-viewing opportunities typical of Big Cypress. If you want to expand a day trip, Shark Valley in Everglades National Park is about 11 miles to the east and the Florida National Scenic Trail crosses roughly 22 miles east; the preserve's auto-tour loop and side trails also make for easy half-day outings. The campground is reached from US-41/Tamiami Trail via Loop Road entering from the east side provides easier access for larger vehicles and the preserve's ORV office (239-695-1117) can answer permit or trail questions.
