Perched on a hillside above the South Platte River at about 6,479 feet, Lone Rock Campground offers open sites with clear river views, scattered ponderosa pines for shade, and immediate access to the river's fishing and play. The South Platte here supports good fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout, and tubing or paddling the river's rapids is a common way to spend an afternoon; kayakers are drawn to the rushing sections nearby. Hikers can step onto the Gill Trail at the campground trailhead and follow a moderately challenging 7-mile route through Cheesman Canyon to Cheesman Dam and Cheesman Lake. Wildlife viewing is strong in this transition zone between prairie and mountains watch for moose, mule deer, owls and golden eagles and the drive south on County Road 126 from Pine Junction rewards visitors with wide valley views and occasional glimpses of Pikes Peak on the western horizon. If you need supplies, limited groceries are available in the small nearby community of Decker. The campground has 17 sites in total: 16 sites configured for both RVs and tents, and one tent-only site. Roads and parking aprons are paved for easier RV access, and every campsite includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; there are two vault toilets and drinking water available from a community hydrant. There are no electrical or sewer hookups, but staff provide trash collection and firewood for sale. Reservations and cancellations follow Recreation.gov policies: cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancellations the day before or on the day of arrival pay a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's fee (one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount paid); no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate plus taxes and add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation end date; card refunds are returned to the original card, while cash or check refunds are issued by mailed Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). Drones (UAS) are regulated on Forest Service lands and must follow federal and agency rules; visitors should review the Forest Service guidance before flying. For campground-specific questions or to confirm current conditions, call (303) 647-2366; from Denver the usual route is Highway 285 southwest to Pine Junction, then south on Jefferson County 126 for about 28 miles to the campground signs.
