About

Buffalo Campground sits in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area about an hour southwest of Denver, tucked into the Front Range at roughly 7,400 feet elevation where summer days typically reach the mid-70s to 80°F and nights cool into the mid-50s to mid-60s. The campground is one of two developed sites in the recreation area and provides 37 single-family campsites 35 that accommodate both RVs and tents and two designated tent-only sites each equipped with an accessible picnic table and a combined campfire ring and grill. There are vault toilets on site but no water or electrical hookups, so plan to arrive self-contained; for facility-specific questions the campground phone is (303) 647-2366. Several trailheads lie within easy walking distance, making it straightforward to leave your vehicle and ride or hike directly into a 40-mile trail network that is especially popular with mountain bikers but also used by hikers and horseback riders. The setting around Buffalo Creek is pine- and oak-dotted hills with Buffalo Creek itself running nearby and providing a local trout fishery, primarily for brook trout. Longer trips from the campground can link you to the Colorado Trail and eventually provide access toward the Lost Creek Wilderness; the drive into the area along County Road 126 is notable for valley views and distant glimpses of Pikes Peak. Reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov: canceling up to two days before arrival carries a $10 fee, while cancellations the day before or the day of arrival cost $10 plus forfeiture of the first night's fee; one-night reservations forfeited entirely if cancelled. No-shows are charged a $20 service fee and the first night's rate is forfeited. If you need a refund, submit the request through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your stay card refunds are returned to the original account, while cash or check refunds are issued by Treasury check and may take 6 8 weeks. Note also that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on Forest Service lands and must be operated in compliance with Forest Service and federal rules.
