“We greatly enjoy this campground. You can hear the sound of the river, hike and fish along it. So relaxing. The camp host, John is very welcoming and a wealth of information on activities around the area.”
“Beautiful and well-maintained campground facility. The West Fork River is awesome.”

West Fork Campground occupies a quiet 10-acre stand of mixed conifers along the West Fork of the San Juan River, a little more than a mile off U.S. Highway 160 and about 13 miles east of Pagosa Springs. The river can be heard from the loop but is generally out of sight; sites alternate between sun and shade under firs and pines. There are 15 single-family campsites, each set up for both tents and RVs most sites are large enough for big rigs and a few lie adjacent to the river though they do not have direct waterfront views. Each site includes a picnic table and metal campfire ring; the campground provides vault toilets and a potable water spigot. The site layout and modest infrastructure favor solitude and straightforward car-camping comfort rather than full hookups or services. The campground is a practical base for hikers and anglers heading into the Weminuche Wilderness: the West Fork Trail (also called the Rainbow Trail) begins a mile beyond the campground and climbs into the wilderness, but note the trail's first stretch crosses private land stay on the marked tread and leave gates as you find them. Fishing is possible in the West Fork and nearby Wolf Creek, but both streams are heavily fished and generally produce only for patient, experienced anglers. Across Highway 160 from the West Fork Road turnoff you'll find trailheads for Windy Pass and Treasure Mountain, and Treasure Falls a 100-foot cascade with a short trail to its base sits about three miles down the highway. The broader San Juan National Forest offers biking, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV routes, picnicking, wildlife viewing and winter sports depending on season. Reservations and fee transactions are handled through Recreation.gov; cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee, cancellations the day before or the day of arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee (one-night cancellations forfeit the entire amount), no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus the first night's rate, and refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends (card refunds go back to the original card; cash or check refunds are issued by mailed Treasury check and can take 6 8 weeks). In the event of an emergency closure, all fees will be refunded and Recreation.gov will attempt to notify visitors using the contact information in their profile.
