“The camp host was not very accessible. The site was at the out edge and steep with the picnic table elevated above the parking site. The one water source was slow. Overall, the site was ok for a one-night stop over but not very usuable.”
“Water pressure is going down. You can only get water at 3 lower faucets. Bad planning when the campground was completely redone all new water lines but did not drill deep enough. Still one of the best places to camp, fishing it always great! ”

Big Meadows Reservoir Campground sits on the upslope above Big Meadows Reservoir in the San Juan Mountains, roughly west of South Fork along Highway 160 with a short turn onto Forest Road 410 SW to reach the site. The campground occupies a series of loops carved into a subalpine hillside, where spruce stands thin out into open meadow pockets and aspens and wildflowers become more common the result of slightly higher rainfall on this side of the lake. The setting reads like a working mountain landscape rather than a manicured park: you'll find views toward the reservoir from many sites, a lightly wooded feel that still leaves room for sunshine, and easy access to the surrounding ranges. The Rio Grande National Forest here spans a wide range of ecosystems and the campground provides a practical base for exploring the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo ranges, nearby Native American ruins, and ghost towns tied to the gold rush. Facilities and practical details are straightforward and geared to campers who value simple, comfortable sites. There are 44 campsites in total 43 that accommodate both RVs and tents and one site designated tent-only each furnished with a campfire ring and a picnic table; drinking water is available on site. The campground does not have an on-site dump station (the nearest is about 13 miles away), but a public boat ramp and an accessible fishing pier sit on the reservoir's north shore, where anglers fish for rainbow, brown and brook trout. From here you can also launch boats, hunt in season, or hit the 6-mile Archuleta Trail for access into the Weminuche Wilderness, which contains headwaters for many of the region's rivers. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings and any access requirements, call the facility number provided for Rio Grande National Forest: (805) 434-1996.
