Cayton Campground sits beside the Dolores River just off Colorado Highway 145, about a short forest-road spur northeast of Rico, in a grassy meadow ringed with fir and aspen at roughly 9,400 feet. The campground has 16 sites total; each is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring. You'll find vault toilets, potable drinking water, and a dump station on site, and several sites offer electrical hookups for rigs that need power. Many sites are positioned close to the river, so mornings fill with river sounds and anglers heading out; evenings are cool at this elevation, so plan warm layers even in summer. The campground is a convenient base for fishing, hiking, scenic drives and other San Juan National Forest activities. The Dolores River fishes for rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout and can be crowded on summer weekends; the Colorado Trail crosses the nearby Bolam Pass ridge, while the Lizard Head and Cross Mountain Trails out near Lizard Head Pass open into high alpine basins ringed by 14,000-foot peaks. Barlow Creek Road continues past the campground over Bolam Pass a route that often requires four-wheel drive for its steep, rough stretches and eventually links toward Hermosa Park Road and U.S. 550. If you need to reserve a site, note the campground's cancellation rules: cancellations made more than two days before arrival incur a $10 fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival carries a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's charges (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount); no-shows are charged a $20 service fee plus the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation ends; card refunds go back to the original payment method, while cash or check refunds are sent as Treasury checks (which can take 6 8 weeks). In the event of an emergency closure, all fees will be refunded.
