“Great campground with excellent host. Allowed us to take a site different than our reservation so we did not have to move. Large sites by the Dolores River. Very Restrooms were very clean. ”
“Very clean, quiet campground close to the river. Blain was the best Host I've ever encountered! Hoping to be able to come back in '26.”

West Dolores Campground sits at about 7,800 feet on the banks of the West Dolores River, shaded by a mix of spruce, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. The site cluster is small and intimate 10 total campsites, each set up for both RVs and tent camping and a few sites include electrical hookups for those who need power. Every campsite has a picnic table and a campfire ring; drinking water and vault toilets are provided, and there's a day-use parking area on site. The river is a prominent feature here: anglers will find brown, rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout within casting distance, but note that several private parcels line stretches of the river, so it's important to stay on designated trails and respect posted boundaries. Access is on Forest Road 535 off Colorado Highway 145, roughly 21 miles north of Dolores and about a mile from Mavreeso Campground. Recreation around the campground is straightforward and varied: hiking, camping and river fishing are immediate draws, while mountain biking is permitted on Forest Roads 532 and 535 and Forest Service Trail 624 starts about three miles south. If you're planning horse trips or want a trailhead into the Lizard Head Wilderness, Burro Bridge campground lies about 19 miles to the north and offers horse camping. The broader San Juan National Forest supports activities from wildlife viewing and picnicking to OHV use and winter sports, and cultural destinations such as Mesa Verde National Park, the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores, Canyon of the Ancients and Hovenweep are within day-trip range. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov; expect standard cancellation rules (cancellations up to two days before incur a $10 fee, same-day or day-before cancellations incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night, one-night cancellations forfeit the full amount, and no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus the first night). Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation ends, and emergency closures are refunded in full.
