McPhee Recreation Complex sits on a broad mesa about 500 feet above McPhee Reservoir at roughly 7,400 feet elevation, where scattered pinyon and juniper trees shape a sun-and-shadow campground with wide views down to the water. The campground contains 52 sites in all: 40 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 4 RV-only sites and 8 tent-only sites. Sites are arranged into several loops, including the Pinon loop (28 sites), the Juniper loop (14 sites) and a Group loop (4 sites); many individual sites include shelters for shade, and picnic tables and campfire rings are standard. Some campsites offer electrical hook-ups and flush toilets are provided in the complex, but you should plan on bringing your own fresh water or confirming water availability before you arrive. The complex also serves boaters and anglers directly: a boat ramp and a fish-cleaning station are located on the shore, and the half-mile Can Do Trail climbs from the campground to an overlook with wide views of the reservoir and the peaks that rise toward Mesa Verde. Recreation at McPhee is primarily water-focused boating, water skiing and fishing on Colorado's second-largest reservoir but the wider San Juan National Forest adds options for hiking, biking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle use, plus winter sports in season. Nearby cultural destinations are close enough for day trips: the Anasazi Heritage Center in Dolores is about 10 minutes away, Mesa Verde National Park is roughly an hour south, and both the Canyon of the Ancients and Hovenweep National Monument sit about an hour's drive to the southwest and west respectively. Reservations are recommended; cancellation and refund rules are managed through Recreation.gov (cancellations more than two days before an individual site incur a $10 fee, later cancellations forfeit the first night plus a $10 service fee or, for no-shows, a $20 service fee and the first night's charges; group facilities have a 14-day cancellation threshold). If you need seasonal or current access details, or confirmation of hookups and potable water, check Recreation.gov or contact the facility manager before you go.
