SAN JUAN NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
House Creek Campground sits on the shore of McPhee Reservoir just outside the town of Dolores in southwestern Colorado, along a short forest-road spur off Colorado Highway 145. The campground occupies a gently sloping meadow near the reservoir's high-water line where native shade trees are scarce, so temperatures can be quite hot in summer; several sites compensate with built shelters but most of the cooling comes from the wind off the water rather than tree cover. There are 13 campsites in total, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, with a mix of group and single-family sites and several spaces offering electric hookups. Standard campsite amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings and grills, vault toilets and a drinking-water source; a boat ramp inside the campground gives direct access to McPhee for boating, water skiing, swimming and fishing along the reservoir's roughly 50 miles of shoreline. House Creek is primarily a water-oriented basecamp, but it's also a handy jumping-off point for exploring the archaeological and scenic attractions of the Four Corners region. The campground's boat ramp and shoreline make it easy to spend full days on the water; beyond the reservoir, the San Juan National Forest supports biking, hiking, horseback riding, OHV use, winter sports and wildlife viewing. Popular cultural sites are within driving range: the Anasazi Heritage Center is about 30 minutes northwest of Dolores, Mesa Verde National Park is roughly 11/2 hours south, Canyon of the Ancients about 11/2 hours southwest and Hovenweep National Monument around 1 hour 45 minutes west. Reservations and fee handling are managed through Recreation.gov; cancellations up to two days before arrival incur a $10 fee, while cancellations the day before or on arrival incur a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeit the full amount). No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, and refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after the reservation end date (card refunds are returned to the original card; cash/check refunds are issued via Treasury check and can take 6 8 weeks). Check Recreation.gov for current seasonal openings, road conditions and any emergency closures.
