“We've camped at Haviland Lake two seasons in a row now. We really like the location. Its quiet and the facilities are clean.”
“It is a little tight for bigger rigs. We have 31ft 5th wheel and no problems. My brother has a 36ft class A and it was tight for him. Very clean vault toilets. ”

Haviland Lake Campground sits on the shore of an 80-acre, no-wake lake about 18 miles north of Durango, reached by a short mile-long turnoff from Highway 550. The sites are set among tall ponderosa pines at 8,705 feet, and many of the 26 campsites offer direct shoreline access and clear views across the water to the Hermosa Cliffs. The lake itself is quiet and well suited to canoeing and small, non-motorized boating; anglers will find rainbow and brown trout and an accessible fishing dock on the lakeshore (a Colorado Division of Wildlife fishing license is required). Trail access is immediate the Forebay Lake Trail begins in the campground and leads just over a mile east to Forebay Lake and history buffs can follow traces of the late-1800s Rico-to-Rockwood Wagon Road that crosses Haviland and nearby Chris Park. Beyond the campground, the San Juan National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor pursuits including hiking, biking, horseback riding and winter sports, so the lakebase works well as a quieter hub for broader exploration. The campground's 26 sites accommodate both RVs and tents and include a mix of single- and double-family layouts; many sites provide electric hookups, and each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring. Basic services on site are drinking water and accessible vault toilets, and the facility places an emphasis on accessibility with an accessible fishing dock. Reservations and cancellations follow Recreation.gov policies: cancellations made up to 2 days before arrival incur a $10.00 fee; cancellations the day before or on arrival pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations forfeited in full with no additional service fee); no-shows are assessed a $20.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within 7 days of the reservation end date; electronic payments are refunded to the original card, while check or cash payments are returned by Treasury check, which may take 6-8 weeks.
