North Canyon Campground sits on the northern shore of Vallecito Reservoir at about 7,900 feet, where scattered ponderosa pines and pockets of aspen rise above an open camping area and willow thickets separate the sites from the water. The setting emphasizes the lake: many of the single-family sites have partial views of Vallecito, and the high peaks of the San Juans are visible to the northwest. Vallecito is a working recreation lake anglers come for German brown, cutthroat, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon and northern pike, and there are boat rentals and places to buy fishing licenses around the lake. Boating, water-skiing and canoeing are common on the reservoir, while two local trails provide dryland options: the North Canyon Trail begins directly across the road and winds through ponderosa and aspen with a short side trail to a lake overlook, and East Creek Trail begins about a quarter-mile northeast on Forest Road 852 and drops into a quieter drainage where brook trout are often found. Note that although those trails are popular with horseback riders, horses are not allowed inside the campground itself. The campground has a total of 12 campsites all 12 are suitable for both RVs and tents arranged as single-family sites equipped with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Shade is somewhat limited because the pines are scattered, but understory thickets offer a measure of privacy between sites. Sites are reservable through Recreation.gov; review the cancellation and fees policy before you book: cancellations made up to two days before arrival incur a $10 cancellation fee, while cancellations the day before or on the day of arrival pay a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's fee (including tax and any add-ons). One-night reservation cancellations forfeit the entire amount paid. No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days after your reservation end date; card refunds are returned to the original card, while cash or check refunds are issued by mailed Treasury check (which can take 6 8 weeks). In the event of an emergency closure, all fees will be refunded and managers will try to notify you through your Recreation.gov contact information. The campground is reached from Bayfield by following US-160 toward Vallecito (about 13 miles north of Bayfield) and then turning onto the short county road that leads to the lakeshore.
