Graham Creek Campground sits above Vallecito Lake in the San Juan National Forest of southwestern Colorado at about 7,900 feet, where open sites under scattered ponderosa pines give way to willow thickets along the shore. The campground contains 15 sites each designed to accommodate both RVs and tents and a handful of those offer direct lake views from hillside perches roughly 100 yards from the high-water line. Sites are separated by a thick understory that provides a measure of privacy; shade is limited because trees are widely spaced. The south side of the campground borders private property, and although several short footpaths lead from the camping area down to the lake, horses are not permitted inside the campground even though many nearby trails are popular with horseback riders. From many spots in camp the high peaks of the San Juans are visible to the northwest, and a short trail across the road leads to a scenic overlook of the lake. Recreational opportunities center on Vallecito Lake fishing is a primary draw (German brown, cutthroat, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon and northern pike) and the shoreline and open water are used for boating, canoeing and water skiing; boat rentals and fishing licenses are available from vendors around the lake. Two main trails serve the immediate area: the North Canyon Trail begins across the road from camp and winds through ponderosa and aspen, while East Creek Trail starts about a quarter-mile up Forest Road 852 and provides access to a quieter drainage where brook trout are found. The campground provides basic amenities: picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water. Reservations and fees are handled through Recreation.gov; cancellations are subject to specific service fees (up to two days before arrival a $10 cancellation fee applies; canceling the day before or on arrival carries a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee, and one-night reservations forfeit the entire amount), no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night, and refund requests must be submitted within seven days after the reservation ends. Access is generally described as north of Bayfield on County Road 501 and across the Vallecito dam; seasonal availability can vary, so check Recreation.gov for current openings and road conditions before you go.
