Matterhorn Campground sits at about 8,500 feet along the San Juan Skyway (Colorado Highway 145), roughly seven miles south of Telluride; when driving from town watch for signs and the left-hand turn into the site. The loop holds 28 single-family sites in total 25 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 3 tent-only sites arranged so that outer-edge sites are mostly wooded while interior sites are more open. Every campsite has a picnic table and a campfire ring; some sites are designed for accessibility and a portion of the RV-capable sites include full hookups. The campground also provides flush and vault toilets, drinking water, coin or token showers, and trash collection, and several walk-to tent sites offer unobstructed panoramic mountain views for those who prefer to carry gear a short distance from their vehicle. Outdoor options radiate directly from the campground and through the surrounding National Forest. You can step onto the Galloping Goose Trail #449 from the campground an 8.4-mile multiuse route that passes a restored train trestle, crosses two bridges and follows sections of the historic Rio Grande Southern Railway, open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Numerous additional hiking trails and scenic driving routes, including off-road tracks, thread the area, and the Lizard Head Wilderness boundary sits roughly three miles away for backcountry access. The nearby town of Telluride, seven miles north, supplies dining, galleries, live music and the free scenic gondola to Mountain Village; for current fees, reservation requirements, seasonal openings and any vehicle- or trail-access restrictions, check Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest resources or recreation.gov before you go.
