Amphitheater Campground sits on the mountainside above the town of Ouray at about 8,400 feet, where a band of massive gray cliffs the formation that gives the site its name towers over the valley. The site is a compact, single-family campground with 35 total campsites: 16 designed to accommodate both RVs and tents, one reserved for RVs only, and 18 for tent camping. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring; the campground provides vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection. The groundcover is a mix of Gambel oak and conifers, and most sites look toward the rock amphitheater carved by ancient volcanic and glacial forces, so you get mountain-side views and a strong sense of being above town rather than down in it. The campground is a convenient trailhead for hikers and off-road enthusiasts alike the popular Upper Cascade Falls Trail begins at Amphitheater, and the same trailhead provides access to Baby Bath Tubs and the Chief Ouray Mine route. Because of its proximity to many jeep and OHV routes, the site is often used as a base for off-highway vehicle trips, while the broader Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, biking, picnicking and winter sports. The town of Ouray roughly two miles north on Highway 550 supplies dining, shopping, lodging and a hot springs pool, so you can combine backcountry days with a warm soak or a meal in town. Access is from Highway 550 south of Ouray; conditions, fees and reservation availability can change, so check the Forest Service or recreation.gov for current information before you go.
