White Star Campground sits at about 9,200 feet on the north shore of Twin Lakes Reservoir beneath the flanks of Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak, offering a mix of open shoreline and stands of ponderosa pine. The site layout totals 49 campsites 46 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and three tent-only sites arranged in three loops: Sage Loop, which has limited shade, and Ridge and Valley Loops, which are denser with ponderosa and spruce. Each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; vault toilets, potable drinking water, and trash collection are available, and firewood is sold at the host site. A public boat ramp, parking and angler access lie just down the road, making Twin Lakes' 2,805-acre reservoir easy to reach for sailing, water-skiing and fishing for lake, rainbow and Mackinaw trout. White Star works well as a base for hikers and mountain bikers the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail runs past the campground (bikes are permitted on the section from Halfmoon Road South to Twin Lakes) and gives relatively direct access to trails that ascend toward Mount Elbert and the Mount Massive Wilderness, where alpine plant communities and permanent snowfields begin above timberline. Practical details to note before you arrive: the campground is accessed from Highway 82 near Twin Lakes roughly 15 miles south of Leadville on Highway 24 before heading west on Highway 82 to the Twin Lakes area and an extra vehicle fee of $10.00 applies. Reservations and cancellations follow the posted Recreation.gov policy: cancellations made up to two days before your reservation incur a $10 cancellation fee; cancelling the day before or the day of arrival results in a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's fee (including tax and add-ons); one-night reservations cancelled forfeit the full payment. No-shows are assessed a $20 service fee and forfeit the first night's rate, taxes and add-ons. Refund requests must be submitted through your Recreation.gov profile within seven days of the reservation end date; card refunds go back to the original card, while refunds for check or cash are issued by Treasury check and can take several weeks. In addition, be aware that Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) are regulated on these public lands follow Forest Service UAS policy and the recreational drone guidance before flying and consider a drive along the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway toward Independence Pass or Aspen if you want a high-elevation day trip.
