What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (909 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“Awesome campground! Reservation allows access to Bear Lake Road. It's also located near the Park & Ride and it's easy to catch a shuttle up to Bear Lake. Bathrooms were very clean. No general store nearby but it's not a long drive to Estes Park for grocery and restaurants”

Zhuang M 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful campground with amazing views! The only thing is it would be nice if each individual campsite had its own bear box. Currently you need to locate the nearest bear box to store items and is not all the convenient. ”

Ellie B 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“It's a nice spot but the straight line to the bathrooms is through neighboring campsites. This site is also in the woods so good for shade but you don't have the vista view of the mountains.”

Travis S 3 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

About

Perched at about 8,500 feet along the Bear Lake Road corridor inside Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier Basin Campground puts you close to many of the park's signature hikes and scenic drives while sitting in a mixed montane forest and open meadow setting. The campground contains 147 sites in total: 64 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 83 tent-only sites, organized into Loop A (31 sites), Loop B (28 sites), Loop C (55 sites), Loop D (24 sites) and nine group sites. Roads and parking spurs are paved, and each site includes a picnic table, a fire ring with grate and a tent pad; flush toilets and drinking water are on site. RV sites do not have hookups, and group sites are available in small, medium and large sizes with nightly fees of $50, $60 and $70 respectively; standard nonelectric sites/tent sites are $35 per night. Reservations are required there are no first-come, first-served options and availability is released on a rolling schedule (some sites open up to six months in advance, while others are released two weeks or one week before the date); group sites can be reserved up to one year ahead. The campground's reservation display uses "A" for available and "NR" for Not Yet Released for upcoming inventory. The character of Glacier Basin reflects both the surrounding forest and the high-mountain environment: Douglas fir, lodgepole and ponderosa pines with occasional Engelmann spruce edge open meadows that fill with grasses, shrubs and seasonal wildflowers. Because pine beetle damage required removal of trees in the C Loop, D Loop and the Group Loop, those areas offer little shade but wide views of the peaks and a clear night sky for stargazing. Wildlife is common through the corridor elk and mule deer are seen most often, and black bear, coyote, bighorn sheep and moose inhabit the park and the campground includes a shuttle stop on the park's free bus system that makes trailheads along the Bear Lake Road corridor accessible without driving. From Glacier Basin you're well placed for the park's activities: extensive hiking (over 300 miles of trails in the park), wildlife viewing, scenic auto touring on Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road, plus opportunities for fishing, climbing, horseback riding, biking, picnicking and winter snow activities elsewhere in the park; the town of Estes Park is a short drive away for additional services and recreation.
