Lake Irwin Campground sits on the west shore of its namesake lake, about nine miles up from Crested Butte at roughly 10,200 feet elevation. The campground fronts calm water to the east with the Ruby Mountain Range rising to the west, and most sites are shaded by mature Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir; vivid wildflower displays sweep the slopes in July and August. In the immediate area expect a mix of rugged singletrack and hiking routes that suit experienced riders and hikers, while on the water canoeing and fishing are common anglers often watch fish rise to the lake's surface on still mornings. Beyond the lake the larger Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest complex provides additional options for auto touring, horseback riding, off-highway vehicle routes, winter sports and wildlife viewing, so Lake Irwin works well as a base for both water- and land-based outings. The campground has 25 single-family sites in total: 10 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 6 RV-only sites and 9 tent-only sites, with several sites designated as accessible. Each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring, and drinking water is available on site. Roads into the area approach from Gunnison via Colorado Highway 135 north toward Crested Butte, then County Road 12 and Forest Road 826 to the campground a relatively short drive from town but high-elevation conditions mean summer days are cool, afternoons often bring showers, and nights can be chilly. Because fees, reservation rules and seasonal access can change, check the Forest Service website or the local ranger district for current information, road conditions and any restrictions before you go; nearby Crested Butte provides services, dining and seasonal events such as the Wildflower Festival if you need supplies or a meal after a day on the trails.
