“Edith and her husband are amazing campground hosts. The campground is super clean and well maintained. Bathrooms even smelled nice and were really clean as well. You can tell they take a lot of pride in caring for their guests and maintaining such a great spot. We'll be back!”

River Hill sits at about 9,200 feet on a meadowed bend of the Rio Grande where willows and scattered trees shade a small loop of 18 campsites; each site is configured to serve both RVs and tent campers. The campground is reached off Highway 149 in the South Fork/Creede area, then about 10 miles down a gravel forest road toward Rio Grande Reservoir, so expect a slower, unpaved approach. Basic facilities include vault toilets, drinking water supplied from wells, and garbage cans; a campfire educational program is offered on some weekend nights. The site inventory is small just 18 total sites so plan ahead for the busy summer stretch: posted fees apply from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend at $20 per night for a single site and $40 per night for a double site. For facility-specific information or current conditions call (805) 434-1996. The river is the focal point here: anglers come for trout in the Rio Grande and nearby Squaw Creek, kayakers put in on calm stretches of river, and the Rio Grande Reservoir is only a couple of miles away for more boating and fishing options. Two trailheads at Squaw Creek and Weminuche Creek leave directly from the area and lead into the Weminuche Wilderness Colorado's largest wilderness with routes that connect to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail; the Weminuche itself includes rugged country and three peaks over 14,000 feet for climbers and horsepackers. Beyond fishing, visitors can access rock climbing in the San Juans, hunting in season, horseback riding, and the wider array of forest activities such as biking, wildlife viewing and winter sports; check with the ranger contact above for seasonal access, road conditions, and any restrictions before you go.
